The Dustless Highway, explores three New Queer Cinema road movies and their use of queer camp as a storytelling technique. The road movie genre was chosen for its inherent fluid structure and nomadic narrative. The characters’ journey from place to place can be seen as symbolic of the queer identity politics of fluidity and performativity, while queer camp’s borrowing from the past blurs the ideas of past and present.
The video piece of this project shows scenes of queer camp and creates an overarching narrative with them. Each film maintains a predominant storyline for all audiences, but by incorporating instances of queer camp they are able to speak to a niche audience as well. The video is an almagamation of these scenes, and is accompanied by a printed roadmap that outlines what each one is referencing.
